ABSTRACT

This thesis provides an in-depth analysis of the contributions made by the Agricultural Development Programmes (ADPs) implemented by the government of Imo State to foster economic growth and development within the state during the period from 1999 to 2007. The research meticulously traces the origins and progression of ADPs, starting from their inception in the old Eastern region of Nigeria, leading to the formation of Imo State in 1976, and culminating in the establishment of the Imo State Agricultural Development Corporation (ADC) in the same year. The study also reviews the various efforts and initiatives undertaken by different ADPs up until the beginning of the study period, offering a comprehensive historical context.

Through the use of both primary and secondary sources, and employing a thematic analytical and eclectic approach, the research critically examines the performance and impact of the ADPs in Imo State during the specified period. The findings reveal that while the ADPs had potential, they faced significant constraints that hindered their effectiveness in driving agricultural growth and economic development. These constraints included inadequate funding, poor infrastructure, and policy inconsistencies, among others.

In light of these challenges, the study offers a set of proactive recommendations aimed at overcoming the identified obstacles. The proposed measures, if adopted, have the potential to significantly enhance the effectiveness of ADPs, thereby contributing to sustained agricultural growth and broader economic development in Imo State. The thesis concludes by emphasizing the importance of addressing these constraints to fully realize the potential of agricultural development as a catalyst for economic progress in the region.
